Woodford Reserve Master's Collection

September 24, 2010

If you're a bourbon lover and haven't heard of The Master's Collection, you've likely been living under a rock for the last five years. Woodford Reserve Master’s Collection is extremely limited ultra-premium bourbon (usually). It began about five years ago with the introduction of the “Four Grain Bourbon.”

If you have a bottle of the Four Grain (or one of the other three Master’s Collection releases), it’s probably not on display with the rest of your bourbon collection. Though I don’t have a bottle, I can imagine the horror of watching my buddy Matt (who always seems to go straight for the Woodford) pouring a huge glass of the precious elixir. It’s enough to make me wake up in a cold sweat.

But there is no bourbon this year. There will still be a Master’s Collection this year. Huh? Well…you can’t call it bourbon if it’s not aged in oak barrels. This year’s edition is aged in “toasted maple wood barrels.” And let me assure you – it’s good. I’m lucky to be one of the first people not in the spirits industry to taste the “Master’s Collection Maple Wood Finish.” Here’s the low-down:

Maple Wood finish is #5 in a series. The previous four were:

  1. Four Grain
  2. Sweet Mash
  3. Sonoma-Cutrer Finish
  4. Seasoned Oak Finish
  • Only 100 barrels were produced and are 6-8 years old.
  • Triple –distilled
  • Finished in toasted (not charred) maple wood barrels
  • “Smooth, elegant whiskey enhanced with hints of maple, honey and cinnamon.
  • 94 proof
  • First of its kind aged in anything other than oak barrels
  • There will be a tasting at Woodford Reserve on Nov. 6
  • Oct. 20 is the proposed Nashville release date

As I was saying, I’ve had a taste of the Master’s Collection Maple Wood Finish. Woodford isn’t joking…this batch is really, really, REALLY good. And you too can try it out. The Master’s Collection is highly allocated and we expect that it will probably not even hit the shelves in some stores. If you’d like your own bottle, we’re taking reservations now, first-come, first-served. Click here to complete the reservation form to get your name in the hat!
