The Balvenie, Caribbean Cask 14 Year Old

October 14, 2010

The Balvenie, the world's most handcrafted Single Malt Scotch Whisky... if you know the name, you're probably thinking Doublewood or Single Barrel. Not so fast! In 2006 the boys from Banffshire tested the waters with a limited release of RumWood 14 year old, then in 2008 a RumCask finished Scotch Whisky checking in at 17 years old. Surprise! Everyone loved them, and they're back, with a 14 year old Caribbean Cask finished Single Malt.

By introducing an exquisite and delicate 14 year old Speyside Single Malt to old Caribbean rum barrels they added the perfect finish. The results is one of the more beautifully balanced single malts I've ever enjoyed. Caribbean Cask is so new The Balvenie doesn't even list it on their website!

This unique expression of malt is one of the most immediately comfortably whiskies I've ever tasted. Though it has a beautiful rich color and a full mouth feel, it has no dominant flavor or nose. It's all about balance, the oak is sweet with a touch of honey, the vanilla flavors are complimented with a hint of tropical fruit and a note of citrus. The classic peat and smoke you'd expect from a Speyside are a mere suggestion lingering back in the shadows.

With it's long silky finish this one is a clear winner in my book, get it while you can (I did!). If you love this one, try some the rest of The Balvenie's exquisite whisky range:
