The Perfect Pair: Wine & Dessert
February 1, 2017
Whether you’re staying in for a home-cooked meal or going out on the town for Valentine’s Day, eating dessert is probably a given. Come the last course of the night, many are left scratching their heads on what to sip. The general rule of thumb is that the color of the dessert should reflect the color of the drink. While we’re not opposed to any types of wine around here, there are some good guidelines if you have flavors similar to these (and recipes if you’re doing the at-home deal!).
Chocolate Cake + Cabernet Sauvignon
Chocolate pairs well with lots of dark wines, but a simple Cab does wonders to the richness of a chocolate cake.
Double Chocolate Bundt Cake with Ganache
Cheesecake + Riesling
Fun fact: cheesecake pairs with just about anything, given its versatility in flavor. If you’re at home, keep things simple and light with this ridiculously easy cheesecake and a slightly sweet wine like Riesling.
3 Ingredient Cheesecake
Tiramisu + Champagne
Tiramisu combines espresso and light ladyfingers for an elegant dessert, which lends itself to the brightness and elegance of a glass of bubbly. If you’re cooking at home, this is a great make-ahead dessert!
Apple Pie + Tawny Port
Port gives the illusion of a caramel apple with a kick. The raisiny, caramelly flavors of a port stand up nicely to the spice of an apple pie.
Perfect Apple Pie
Crème Brulee + sweet Muscat
A sweet Muscat pairs well with most desserts, especially a good brulee. They can come in tons of different flavors from dark chocolate to milk chocolate to caramel, and a Muscat will align beside them all. And while it can be intimidating, crème brulee is pretty simple to make yourself!
No-Fail Crème Brulee
Bread Pudding + Madeira
A warm rich bread pudding pairs perfectly with the nut, toffee, and fruity flavors of a Madeira. Madeira is another wine that can sit alongside many desserts, but not many wines can round out the high level of sweetness of a bread pudding.
Bananas Foster Bread Pudding
If you're in the market for a bottle of any of these wines, stop on in and we'd be happy to make a recommendation!
