Guys vs. Girls Beer Tasting

April 27, 2015

Bluegrass Beverages stocks a lot of beer - A LOT of beer. That's a great thing for you, the consumer...only it can bring on a severe case of 'paralysis by analysis.' There can be so many options, it's difficult to make a choice.

Guys vs. Girls Beer Taste-Off to the rescue. We decided to throw ourselves in the fermented briar patch to introduce you to some tasty new offerings in the beer world. To make it more interesting, we tasted these new beers one evening at the home of Mr. Bill Sinks and his lovely bride, Amanda. Here's what we discovered...

Beer #1 - Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale
Alltechs Brewing and Distilling Co., Lexington, KY

"Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale is a unique sipping beer with the distinctive nose of a well-crafted bourbon. It is aged for up to 6 weeks in freshly decanted bourbon barrels from some of Kentucky's finest distilleries."

Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale is the only beer in our lineup that is not new to the market. It is my go-to when I want to enjoy a bourbon AND a beer. Oddly, even though it sounds me it's great any time of year. It's just hard to beat for anyone who enjoys a good cocktail.

Some experienced anything from "a hint of lemon" to "rich chocolate" and the one that surprised me: "ginger ale." Hey, everyone's palate is a little different. When it was cracked open, the immediate consensus seemed to be that this is a dudes beer. However, the girls loved this one! It was noted that there is a very low possibility that more than two of these beasts could be consumed at any one sitting. I won't argue.

Beer #2 - Stone Delicious IPA (India Pale Ale)
Stone Brewing Co., Escondido, CA

"This intensely citrusy, beautifully bitter beer is worthy of the simple-yet-lordly title of Stone Delicious IPA. Lemondrop and El Dorado hops combine to bring on a magnificent lemon candy-like flavor that’s balanced by hop spice."

Stone Brewing, you irreverent devils. For years, Stone has been brewing bold, delicious beers that would drive the light beer drinker to the brink of insanity. But if you want a great IPA that is light enough for hot weather, the sort of which we tolerate in Nashville, give Stone Delicious IPA a try. It's citrus flavor with hops for days is a refreshing, yet bold brew. Be warned - it's a limited release, so you'd better get on it if you want some!

Beer #3 - Agave Amber Ale
Thump Keg Brewing Co., Latrobe, PA

"Agave Amber Ale's inspiration is taken from Peligroso Tequila by using its signature blue agave. The agave and lemon grass flavor notes balance the flavor between malt and hops to create crisp Amber Ale."

After the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale and Stone Delicious IPA...the Agave Amber Ale was a really refreshing curve-ball. Both the guys and gals iked it equally! While it doesn't have the bold character of the preceding brews, it was enjoyed immensely. Comments included "mild, rich, sweet taste, no nose, easy drinking, zesty, interesting finish."

Beer #4 Cougar Bait American Blonde Ale
Country Boy Brewing, Lexington, KY

"Cougar Bait American Blonde Ale is a crisp straw-colored ale with a unique malt and citrus hop balance. This beer was the brainchild of an all-night trip back from Michigan. Fueled by snack cakes and energy drinks, the boys pulled this recipe out of their exhausted noggins."

Everyone LOVED this beer while thinking of the impending heat of summer. "Party beer, drinkable, perfect for summer, smooth, easy to drink, full-bodied but not heavy." If you enjoy a day on the lake - and hey, who doesn't? - this is probably one you'll want to put in your cooler.

Beer #5 Golden Wing Blonde Ale
Finch's Beer Company, LLC, Chicago, IL

"Finch's Blone Ale ia an easy drinking and approachable American craft beer. It has a moderately sweet malty aroma and is deep gold in color. We like to think of this particular one as more of a 'Dirty Blonde.'"

Don't look for the Golden Wing Blonde Ale on Finch's it's so new, they haven't even added it to their lineup of brews...but Bluegrass Beverages has it!

Like Cougar Bait, the Finch's Golden Wing Blonde Ale was appreciated as "easy drinking, light, crisp, refreshing, smooth." Noted beer aficionado Seth Good said: "Solid all around...could work at home or at a tailgate. Of the five, I'd choose this one to please a diverse crowd."

The Executive Summary

Weak beer is for weak people...and we don't invite the weak to our strong beer tastings. Every one of the beers we tried has a great character that snagged at least a couple of beer-loving individuals in our midst. So if you're looking for a great beer this summer - something that will make your conversations and leisure even better - grab a six-pack or two of our latest selections...and let us know what you think!

NOTE: Copious amounts of meat and cheese were consumed during this tasting. If you were not aware, you now have no excuses: Bluegrass Beverages stocks fresh Boar's Head Genoa Salami, Bianco D'Oro Italia Dry Salami, Three Pepper Colby Jack Cheese, Double Gloucester Cheese, and Canadian Cheddar. Without these fine meats and cheeses, our experience...well, it still would have been fantastic, but we'd have been hungry...and Mr. Sinks does not do 'hungry.'
